Birding at Deer Lake on Whidbey Island                               (Click on photos to enlarge)

Birds like Deer Lake and are fun to watch.  These fuzzy pictures were taken either from the Deer Lake house lawn or from a canoe in the lake over a few weekends.  There are many birds I haven't caught of image of yet, like the Osprey catching a large trout as I paddled by.

Great blue heron fishing in the shallows. It had just caught a small fish, but I was too slow to get the picture.

A pair of hooded mergansers hanging out together

Bald eagles in love. They were singing sweetly to each other as I rowed by

Female common merganser (I think) enjoying the sunshine on a rock

Teenage ducks on a tour with their mother

Shy bufflehead ducks swimming

Migrating Canadian geese stopping for a rest in October

Some Canadian geese hang around for the winter and occasionally invade the lawn. They are quite a sight.

Belted kingfisher on our dock, taken from dining room. It's tough to get close to these shy birds

Great blue heron fishing at the corner of our lawn. This picture was taken from the dining room window.
